Safety

This section carries 3 questions12% of the exam. Safety is not just about passing the exam — it's about protecting your life and the lives of others.

8AElectrical Safety

Danger: High Voltage

Mains electricity (240V AC) and high voltages in equipment can be lethal. Always treat electrical equipment with respect.

8A1: High Voltages

  • Mains voltage (240V) can kill — even low currents through the heart are fatal
  • Capacitors can store dangerous charge even after power is disconnected
  • Always assume capacitors are charged until verified otherwise
  • Use a multimeter to check for stored voltage before working on equipment

8A2: Mains Electricity Dangers

  • Never work on mains-powered equipment with the power on
  • Use proper tools with insulated handles
  • Keep one hand in your pocket when working near live parts (prevents current passing through the heart)
  • Ensure equipment is properly earthed

8A3: Fuses and RCBOs

Protection devices save lives:

  • Fuses — melt and break the circuit if current is too high
  • RCBOs (Residual Current Breaker with Overload) — detect fault currents and disconnect the supply quickly
  • Always use the correct rating fuse
  • Test your RCBOs regularly using the test button

8A4: Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

PAT testing checks electrical equipment for safety. While not legally required for domestic use, it's good practice:

  • Visual inspection before each use
  • Periodic testing by a competent person
  • Check cables for damage, plugs for correct wiring
  • Keep a record of test dates and results

8A5: Isolation Transformers

An isolation transformer provides galvanic isolation from the mains supply. It reduces the risk of electric shock when working on equipment.

  • Disconnects the equipment from the earth reference
  • Reduces the risk of a fault causing a shock through the earth path
  • Essential for working on non-double-insulated equipment

8A6-8A8: Battery Dangers

Batteries pose several hazards:

General Battery Hazards (8A6)

  • Can deliver very high currents — short circuits cause sparks and fire
  • Store in a cool, dry place
  • Never mix old and new batteries
  • Dispose of batteries properly — don't incinerate

Lead-Acid Battery Hazards (8A7)

  • Contain sulphuric acid — highly corrosive
  • Produce hydrogen gas when charging — explosive
  • Heavy — risk of back injury when lifting
  • Ensure good ventilation when charging
  • Wear eye protection when handling

Lithium Battery Hazards (8A8)

  • Can catch fire or explode if damaged or overcharged
  • Use only approved chargers
  • Never puncture or crush
  • Stop using if the battery swells or gets hot
  • Store in a fireproof container when charging

8BRF Safety

RF Burns Can Be Severe

Radio frequency energy can cause serious burns and tissue damage. Never take chances with RF safety.

8B1: RF Burns

RF burns occur when radio frequency energy passes through body tissue. They can be severe because the energy heats tissue deep beneath the skin.

  • Can occur even at low power levels
  • More likely in high-power stations or with poor antenna systems
  • Symptoms may not appear immediately — seek medical attention if you feel a burning sensation

8B2: RF Exposure Limits

There are legal limits on RF exposure for both operators and the general public:

  • Exposure limits depend on frequency and duration
  • You must comply with the EMF requirements in your licence
  • Keep a safe distance from antennas when transmitting
  • Do an EMF assessment for your station

8B7: Golden Rule

NEVER touch a transmitting antenna!

Always ensure your station is not transmitting before touching any part of the antenna system. Use the transmit button carefully.

8CAntenna Safety

8C1: Falls from Height

  • Always use proper access equipment (ladders, scaffolding)
  • Have someone to foot the ladder
  • Never overreach — move the ladder instead
  • Check weather conditions — don't work at height in high winds or rain
  • Use a safety harness when working at significant height

8C2: Overhead Power Lines

Danger: Overhead Power Lines

Contact with overhead power lines is often fatal. Keep all antennas and equipment well away from power lines.

  • Check for power lines before erecting any antenna
  • Maintain a safe distance (at least 10 metres)
  • If an antenna falls onto power lines, stay clear and call the electricity company
  • Never try to retrieve an antenna from power lines

8C3: Lightning Protection

  • Disconnect antennas during thunderstorms
  • Use a lightning arrestor on the feeder cable
  • Ensure your station has a good earth connection
  • Consider a dedicated lightning protection system for large antenna installations

8DGeneral Safety

8D1: Safe Lifting

  • Bend your knees, not your back
  • Get help for heavy items
  • Use mechanical aids where possible
  • Lead-acid batteries are very heavy — take care!

8D2: Soldering Safety

  • Soldering irons are very hot (300-400°C)
  • Use a proper stand — never lay a hot iron on the bench
  • Work in a well-ventilated area — solder fumes are harmful
  • Wash hands after handling lead-based solder
  • Use lead-free solder where possible
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby

8D3: Drilling Risks

  • Check for hidden cables and pipes before drilling
  • Use a cable detector
  • Wear safety glasses
  • Use the correct drill bit for the material

8D4: Insulated Tools

  • Use insulated tools when working on or near live equipment
  • Check tools for damage regularly
  • Insulated tools are rated for specific voltage levels

8ENoise at Work

8E1: Noise Exposure Limits

Prolonged exposure to high noise levels can damage hearing. While amateur radio is generally not a high-noise environment, some equipment (e.g., cooling fans, antenna rotators) can be loud.

  • UK daily exposure limit: 87 dB(A) averaged over 8 hours
  • Upper exposure action value: 85 dB(A)
  • Use hearing protection if noise levels are high
  • Consider noise when placing equipment

8FFirst Aid

8F1: CPR Basics

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) can save a life if someone's heart stops beating.

  • Check the scene is safe
  • Call 999 (or 112) immediately
  • Start chest compressions — push hard and fast in the centre of the chest
  • Rate: 100-120 compressions per minute
  • Depth: at least 5 cm (2 inches)
  • If trained, give rescue breaths after every 30 compressions
  • Continue until help arrives or the person recovers

8F2: Burns Treatment

  • Cool the burn under cool running water for at least 20 minutes
  • Remove jewellery and clothing near the burn (unless stuck to the skin)
  • Cover with a sterile, non-adherent dressing
  • Do not apply creams, butter, or ice to burns
  • Seek medical attention for serious burns

8F3: Electric Shock Response

  1. Do not touch the person while they are in contact with the electrical source
  2. Switch off the electricity at the mains if possible
  3. If you can't switch off, separate the person from the source using a dry, non-conductive object (e.g., wooden broom handle)
  4. Call 999 immediately
  5. Start CPR if the person is not breathing
  6. Treat for shock — keep the person warm and calm

Remember:

Your safety comes first. Don't become a second victim by touching someone who is still in contact with an electrical source.
